Obit of the Day (Breaking): Singer Davy Jones
Davy Jones died this morning at the age of 66. Jones gained international fame as a member of the Monkees, a manufactured performing group created for television. Jones sang many of the Monkees’ hits, most famously “Daydream Believer.”
Jones was actually a child start featured in the original cast of the musical Oliver! as the Artful Dodger. He won a Tony award for his performance when the show came to Broadway from London. According to Wikipedia, Jones and the cast performed on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964 the night that The Beatles made their historic premiere.
After the Monkees Jones worked as an actor and recorded solo albums but never reached the success he had with the band. In the summer of 2011 Jones, Mickey Dolenz (the other lead singer) and Peter Tork held a 45th anniversary tour - Mike Nesmith has distanced himself from the group - but dates in fall were cancelled for no known reason.
